THE HIDDEN HERITAGE IN MOUNT TEMANG DONGAN - SUMBAWA
Let’s get back to the distant past in Pungkit, sub district of Lopok, Sumbawa Regency, where we can go and trek to a small mountain known as Temang Dongan, located about 4 km from the village.
In the era of Megalith, Temang Dongan was a small village, people in the past time buried the dead body into the boulder as we known as sarcophagus.
On the mountain of Temang Dongan there are 7 Sarcophagus scattered in 3 Different location, there is a flat just before we reached the top of the mountain, 3 Sarcophagus can be found, some of it had been splited into two, sorts of relief are sculpted to resemble a human face and animal, the local called “Batu Babung” which means “The Doll Stone”.
Temang Dongan Megalithic Tomb is somewhat not nurtured, almost all the site are difficult to find as it is covered by the lush trees around it.
The site keeper Bapak, Abdullah Panindrung told us that “actually there were about 9 Sarcophagus on the mountain, but not all of us can see the other 3 of it, if you are lucky, then you can see all the sites”. He said. He also recited us about the legend, that there was a small kingdom located on the mountain, and it is known as Dongan Kingdom. And in the history era, the community went down the mountain and built their new place which then known as “Tras” many years then, people moved again to the new place to where we are now, and named “Pungkit”.
When we were on the mountain, we found 6 Sarcophagus in 3 different location, 3 in the flat area before the top, and 3 other on the top of the mountain.
The top of the mountain is just a small place, covered by the bushes and surrounded by green trees.
1 hour trek, you will be rewarded by the stunning views from up there.
