Barapan is a traditional event of the the best “Sandro”, Jockey and Buffalo around planting season in Sumbawa. The tradition Race Is not only held at Pamulung village, but existed also in the village of Senampar village, Moyo village, Poto Village, Lengas village, Batu Bangka village, and almost all village in West Sumbawa.
The Traditional Buffalo race is held in early rice planting season. Location take part in fields that had been soaked or have been flooded as a knee. The treatment of the Buffalo’s owner Is the same as the traditional horse racing treatment. Buffalo’s participants collected 3 or 4 days just before this cultural event be held, to measure the height and the age. It is intended, in order to be specified in the class what water Buffalo can be contested. The duration or length of an event is determined of how many Buffalo participated in the cultural event took part.
Things much different from Madura Cow race or Mekepung in Bali, is, in Sumbawa Buffalo race the performance penalty is the Sandro, Jockey have to run the Buffalo with the help of his own Sandro back-up to hit the magic stick that covered by batik Painting cloth. The athletes must master balancing on small, wooden chariots as they are dragged behind two primed bullocks across a paddy field shin-deep in muddy water. These animals have been bred and trained for water buffalo racing and they move at speeds of over 30 mph. The athletes will have to battle their nerves and race over a distance of 300m.
